It is high time for the Ministry of Education to review and take stern remedial actions to teach Maths and Science in both primary and secondary schools throughout Malaysia.
According to a study by UPSI professor of Education, the poor performance of the students in both subjects are due to the poor English skills of the teachers concerned.
Most EteMS teachers who receive their monthly incentive did not go through professional teaching before teaching Mathematic and Science in English. Actually the government must get the blames for not training all the EteMS teachers before implementing the policy. The common phenomenon is most teachers are using their mother tongue to teach Maths and Science.
The National Union of Teaching Profession will propose to the Education Ministry for Mathematics and Science subjects to be taught in students' mother tongue in vernacular primary schools.
The terminologies of the two subjects in English should be introduced and familiarized from the kindergarten level. This will help the students when they move to primary and then up to the secondary school.
